Extracellular signaling plays an important role in understanding cellular communication, microenvironments and molecular dynamics related to disease onset and development. This article reviews recent nanotechnology advances for optical sensing of extracellular analytes in the biomedical field, including descriptions of the methods, characteristics, advantages, disadvantages, and possibilities for these methods of sensing to be utilized in the future.
